HOW TO TUNE A TRUMPET

USING A TRUMPET TUNER OR TUNING APP

A trumpet tuner would help you recognize the flat and sharp notes on a trumpet, and also allow you to adjust them as required. The choice of the type of tuner you want to use is left to you. There are electric trumpet tuners and tuning apps for mobile devices available.

You can buy them online or at a music store near you. A basic tuner should get the job done. Try not to get used to using a tuner often. Learn to develop an ear for the right and wrong tones over time. However, this does not condemn the use of a tuner.

LOCATE THE TUNING SLIDE OF THE TRUMPET

The tuning slide is used to adjust the pitch of the trumpet. It is located at the end of the instrument, directly below the bell and shaped like a metal loop. There are pictures online that you can check if you don’t know what a tuning slide looks like.

SET THE NOTE OF THE TUNER TO A C NOTE

For a start, you can play any note to check the tune of your trumpet. However, C is the simplest to play and is very easy to check. Adjust your trumpet tuner to a C note to check the base note of your trumpet. You can check the instruction manual or online, in case you do not know how to change the note of a trumpet tuner.

PLAY THE C NOTE ON YOUR TRUMPET AND COMPARE IT TO THE TUNER

Blow the trumpet without holding any of the valves. While or after blowing, depending on the tuneritself, check the reading on the tuner to see what note your trumpet is actually producing.

ADJUST THE NOTE OF THE TRUMPET WITH THE SLIDE

The tuner would tell you not your trumpet produces at that moment, and you can adjust this using the tuner at the end of the trumpet. Just pull the slider in to make the sound sharp and pull it out to make it flat.

PLAY THE C NOTE ON YOUR TRUMPET TO SEE IF IT MATCHES THE TUNER

After you have adjusted the slide of your trumpet to get the sound that matches the tuner, cross check to see if they match. If they don’t match, use the slide again until you get it. If they do, then you are good to go.

You can also check other notes to see if they are in tune, although it is not necessary. One the base note is in tune; the rest should follow suit unless your instrument is faulty.

TRUMPET TUNING NOTE

For all purposes, tune your trumpet to a C note. This is the best option for live performances so that you can easily change pitch to match the key of other instruments. Just remember that most trumpet tuners use ‘#’ as a sharp sign and ‘b’ as a flat sign.
